Noah's landing was much softer behind the scenes.

Emmerdale has pulled back the curtain on two of its most shocking moments from the past week.

The soap published a video on its Instagram account revealing how the crew filmed two of the show's recent stunt scenes – Cain and Chas' car accident that ended with a telegraph pole smashing onto their car, and Noah being pushed into an open grave by Kerry as punishment for him stalking Chloe.

For the grave scene, it's revealed that Noah (Jack Downham) had a much softer landing than the one he took in the episode.

The crew had initially covered the hole on the ground with crash mats, possibly to film a close-up that first focused on Kerry's movements.

But for the character's actual descent, the show utilised a number of carton boxes, stacking them on top of each other in the open grave so, when Downham fell, he would land on a soft surface, preventing any injuries.

For Chas and Cain's scene, the crew were just as meticulous with their planning. They conducted several safety checks, having the actors walk a safe distance away from the crushed car before they let the telephone pole fall on top of the vehicle.

The pole also didn't crash on impact; according to the behind-the-scenes clip, the crew had control over its movements as they slowly lowered it towards the car to double check the distance between the descending pole and the actors.

Fake smoke machines were another handy tool, which were lodged under the car's mangled hood for an extra effect.

And despite the safety measures taken, the end result still made for a terrifying spectacle.

The cameras rolled and Cain was dragged away as the car's hood went up in smoke from the crash.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
